Current Reading State: Cleansing

I give too much space to books that won’t do anything for me. I have noticed recently many examples that illustrate this point. For example, I was telling someone certain things about The Mortal Instruments series. I realized I know so much about the series even though I have not completed any of the books in the universe. This probably is not that bad considering the series came out around the time when I was still reading young adult books. The issue comes in when I went to the store a couple of days ago and saw the newest book. I knew about it because one of my email subscriptions talked about it. Why do I follow/subscribe to something that tells me about books I am trying to get away from?  One of the big issues in moving forward in my reading is cutting the ties that keep me connected to the toxicness in my reading.

Detoxing

In the past I have mostly focused on connecting-following more people who read what I like to read at the moment. I did not really put my sights on the opposite, cutting cords- disconnecting from the things that keep me connected to toxicness. I say toxicness because the little bit of fiction  (and some of the non-fiction) I’ve read so far this year is making me have reading slumps.

What I am doing so far to disconnect:

  • unsubscribing/unfollowing
  • managing the settings of places that can be converted
  • looking at the bad habits that keep me connected

Arguably, the biggest thing I have done so far is go through my email subscriptions (haven’t done this in years so know that it was time-consuming). Seeing how many company/blogs I subscribed to that are not where I am in my reading interests it is no wonder I had such a hard time moving on. I might do a post on the aftermath of doing this.

[comic vine]

Did not like it from page one because I immediately just did not care about it.  It overall feels like they don’t know where they want to go with this series. I did side eye, Sally-O, the only black girl in the book seemingly existing to service the white girl  main character.

Pro: Harley Quinn makes an appearance (Harley and Ivy relationship is cute).

Con: Poison Ivy and Harley were not fun here. Poison Ivy like All Nighter did not seem like they knew where it wanted to go either. Then the story had one of those we are so feminist moments  -_-  You know when the men are hassling  a woman and they go in and save the woman. It feels surface level.

Overall, I don’t think it was terrible but it wasn’t exciting.

Pro: The main character and everything she did was so cute. That is why it is sad how accurate it is to middle school bullying. A certain part of the story (not trying to spoil anything) had me about to tear up.

Con: I’m not in love with it yet

Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur actually reminds me of the Oh No! picture book series.

Pro: It’s feminist, racial and body diversity, addresses racial things especially dealing with feminism, it handled the exposition of the way of the world well (Poison Ivy looking at you)

Pro/Con: don’t know how I feel about the portrayal of the plus sized character.

Conclusion

These comics I read where eh for the most part. I didn’t find anything that I loved but I think that there is potential for the ones I decided to continue.

What is up with these miniseries being slow/meandering? It seems like they don’t know where they want to go. I guess it makes sense why they are miniseries versus ongoing. If they know they are going to be limited run things need to be tighter.
