One of the things I love the most is reading about black people during the 18th century. Coming from a person who was heavily into classics and likes the 18th-19th century this is awesome.

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks

Chapters: 4/38

Pages: 42/370

I like this because it speaks on so many levels of history, racism, and the issues in the medical community.

A Dance With Dragons

Chapters: None

Pages: 448/1125

50%: about 114 pages away

When I first got back into this I was annoyed/disheartened by how disconnected I felt. As I read beyond certain people I got back into part  of what makes this series fun to read.

Hopefully, I can do an update in June about finishing or getting to 50% of at one of these books. I think more than likely I will get to 50% of A Dance With Dragons first.

336: Valley of the Dolls

This is an old review I drafted so my opinion is kind of outdated on this: I saw a post on trash literature on this book either  before starting this book or early into it. I do not think it was that trashy. Then again I may have a high tolerance. All I know is that I liked it enough to read it to the end.

Synopsis:

Dolls: red or black; capsules or tablets; washed down with vodka or swallowed straight-for Anne, Neely, and Jennifer, it doesn’t matter, as long as the pill bottle is within easy reach. These three women become best friends when they are young and struggling in New York City and then climb to the top of the entertainment industry-only to find that there is no place left to go but down-into the Valley of the Dolls.

Review

This book was a very weird haze that I went through. Since this came out during the 60s I was not harsh on it like I would be with current day authors.

First of all, there is no character development to speak of. Second, events happen and never get a mention again. Yep, this was campy. There was a poem at the beginning of this novel that really fit the entirety of the novel.

I definitely don’t regret reading it but I feel if I read it now I probably would not like it.

I had a weird craving for Mike & Ikes while reading this book.

Review

If you watch Buzzfeed hacks on well just about anything then you will enjoy browsing through this book. I liked the design of this book, which has animations and pictures of the food, and I did enjoy finding recipes that I could either buy really inexpensively or create from items I currently have. I didn’t use it for anything dealing with alcohol because I don’t drink but the alcoholic items seemed interesting as well and I might put a nice non-alcoholic twist to them. I think what helps is that a lot of the recipes were simplistic and easy to do/try out so for those like me that don’t cook you can enjoy trying something different. It actually gives solid advise and character in presenting the recipes. I can say that I didn’t do everything in the book, but I do plan to try more in the future. An example recipe that I did try out is:

Gummy Bear Popsicles: When I first made the popsicle before getting this recipe book with my family we did not shake all the gummy bears after one hour. Unfortunately they did all sink to one spot which I did not enjoy. Overall, I don’t think I like the gummy bear popsicle, thinking about it now….I don’t like regular gummy bears by themselves. Maybe next time I’ll try to see if sour gummy bears actually improve the recipe.

However I did like the book it’s again great for really affordable and quick alternatives to cooking if you are a person like me who either doesn’t cook or doesn’t really have the time to cook snack items.

I received this book from Blogging for Books for this review.
