Where is it available? tor, nook (not free online b&n page but is possibly free if you own a nook since that is where I found it for free)

Makino’s mother taught her caution, showed her how to carve her name into cucumbers, and insisted that she never let a kappa touch her. But when she grows up and her husband Tetsuya falls deathly ill, a kappa that claims to know her comes calling with a barbed promise. “A Cup of Salt Tears” is a dark fantasy leaning towards horror that asks how much someone should sacrifice for the one she loves.

Cons

It feels like it is missing something.

Pros

  • Kappas

I’m into Japanese culture  so I have seen kappas before but never as a hint they could be evil. It is interesting to see uncommonly used (in American stories) mythology.

  • The story gives enough information for you to not have to research kappas

I did anyway because I was so interested in their mythology.

  • Writing

I haven’t read something that is considered literary in a while so this was nice to read.

  • Cover

-colors

-represents what happens in the book

-kappa is sexed up (lol)

Romance

First, I enjoyed the couples relationship and think this could have been a novel. This story could be considered romance but at the same time not. It is labeled romance on goodreads but not on tors site. I do think it is a romance but it isn’t what most people would classify as romance. Then again usually if book is literary it is by default not considered romance.

Library Checkout {38} Along Came A Spider

I actually managed to checkout less than 20  books from the library.

Preliminary DNFs

I just don’t feel I will like these and my brother confirmed that I wouldn’t.

Picture Books/Graphic Novels

I only got two picture books but Long Tail Kitty is technically a graphic novel (structurally and style wise).  I need to probably get more picture books next time to break up all the graphic novels I get.

I don’t know how I am going to feel about Scalped. It is one of those books that I keep passing over because I feel I wouldn’t like it. One of the main reasons it did not get passed over again is my brother picking it up. Ms. Marvel vol. 2 on the other hand I am looking forward to immensely since the first volume was really good.  Young Avengers seems like it could be really good but I don’t know. Knowing myself as a reader it could miss me completely.

Spiderverse

Did not realize when I was reserving books that I got so much of the spider universe.

23017950

When I reserved this I did not realize that this was:

A. So big -624 pages

B.  Compiled entirety (or most) of the Spiderverse

23439926

Hence why I got this not realizing that this volume is in  the Spiderverse book. It does make sense now  that the library site doesn’t say volume 1 or 2 but does say simply Spiderverse. Also, the cover on the Spiderverse on the library site is the same as the Edge of Spiderverse cover.

1247127417368270

It is a good thing I did not get as many books as I usually do so now I can read some of the comics I own between these spiderman comics. Probably won’t read all of these this haul but I’m excited about all of these.

Samples & Previews: Cleaning Out My Reading Journal

I started writing in a new journal around the time school was about to end in May. Now, I have reached the end of the journal leaving a lot of books I haven’t reviewed yet. This is my post(s) to clear out all books not reviewed yet.

I haven’t touched a human in three years. That seems like it would be a difficult task, but it’s not. Not anymore, thanks to the internet.

I am, quite possibly, the most popular recluse ever. Not many shut-ins have a 200-member fan club, a bank account in the seven-figure range, and hundreds of men lining up to pay for undivided attention.

They get satisfaction, I get a distraction. Their secret desires are nothing compared to why I hide… my lust for blood, my love of death.

Taking their money is easy. Keeping all these secrets… one is bound to escape.

What if you hid yourself away because all you could think of was killing? And what if one girl’s life depending on you venturing into society?

Enter a world of lies, thrills, fears, and all desires, in this original thriller from A. R. Torre.

[Chapters 1-5]

The story is different so far: the main character is a cam girl, locked in her apartment, and wants to kill.

My only possible issue is something is off with this book. I cannot tell what it is but this reason may stop me from getting this book. DNF

The youngest of six talented sisters, Elyse d’Abreau was destined for stardom—until a boating accident took everything from her. Now, the most beautiful singer in Tobago can’t sing. She can’t even speak.

Seeking quiet solitude, Elyse accepts a friend’s invitation to Atargatis Cove. Named for the mythical first mermaid, the Oregon seaside town is everything Elyse’s home in the Caribbean isn’t: An ocean too cold for swimming, parties too tame for singing, and people too polite to pry—except for one.

Christian Kane is a notorious playboy—insolent, arrogant, and completely charming. He’s also the only person in Atargatis Cove who doesn’t treat Elyse like a glass statue. He challenges her to express herself, and he admires the way she treats his younger brother Sebastian, who believes Elyse is the legendary mermaid come to life.

When Christian needs a first mate for the Cove’s high-stakes Pirate Regatta, Elyse reluctantly stows her fear of the sea and climbs aboard. The ocean isn’t the only thing making waves, though—swept up in Christian’s seductive tide and entranced by the Cove’s charms, Elyse begins to wonder if a life of solitude isn’t what she needs. But changing course again means facing her past. It means finding her inner voice. And scariest of all, it means opening her heart to a boy who’s best known for breaking them . .

[Up to chapter 2]

Negatives: Of course the guys family is super rich and has multiple colored eyes.  Overall, I’m not blown away by it.

Positives: How Sarah Ockler described the main character in terms of skin tone, cultural background, and as a person is interesting.

I put  The Summer of Chasing Mermaids release date on pusleit on my calendar months ago.  By the time it  finally released I had already let go of y.a. so I did not have the most enthusiasm to read this. I over road this feeling just so I could try this book out (if we are being honest for the main character girl, Elyse). It is not a bad book but I felt like I was forcing myself to read it.  DNF

-main guy is chauvinistic, overall story was looking like a 3 or 2.5 at the point I was reading it

Vanessa Imenerse is a beautiful, African American woman, who is both smart and savvy. A corporate headhunter is trying to get her to accept a job as CEO of GainsCorp, so Vanessa thought she’d enjoy a well earned vacation in New York at his expense. Vanessa decides to investigate. She discovers her neighbor is an incredibly handsome man who is bed bound while he recovers from a car accident.

When Vanessa walks into his apartment Carter sees a beautiful woman who identifies herself as Vanessa I’m-a-nurse (Imenerse) and he immediately thinks she has been sent by the nursing agency to replace the girl who quit! Vanessa tries to explain the misunderstanding, but he won’t listen and through compassion she decides to help him.

They both fall in love while she looks after him and after he recovers they explore New York city together.

The CEO’s Reluctant Lover Series
===========================
Book 1: April 2014
Book 2: May 2014
Book 3: June 2014

Cons

  • The shortness

It feels too short to handle a lot of things it dealt with (I keep complaining about this so I may try to read longer books). I feel it would’ve been better to throw some of the things in earlier/later to develop them further. It just put in too many plot threads in the finale countdown.

  • Slut shaming?
Its that weird thing the men do in books were they go on about how special the heroine is to them but weirdly belittles all the women they were with before. It is either they were all air heads, gold diggers, just for them to sleep with, or whatever. I don’t know if I am explaining this well. Please someone tell me you have experienced this before.
  • Cheese
It had moments of the characters declaring their love for each other which bordered on being too much for my taste. I would rather see/feel their relationship than being told about it. Also, the relationship developed too quickly for it to be a continuation after this.
  • Grammatical errors

Pros

  • Romance

I can admit that this book had a way better relationship and story at 30 pages than Pieces of Paper.

  • Woman CEO
So it doesn’t feel like a Cinderella story because both characters have high paying jobs.

Pros/Cons

The title is not bad but after looking through a bunch of books having the [insert rich man title] it feels like this book could stand out better with another title. I kind of feel like the title doesn’t describe this book well enough.

Something I noticed (not exactly a con or pro or anything) is the lead on the book cover doesn’t match the guy on the cover. I don’t have a problem with this because I know it is probably already an issue just to get a cover with a black woman on it. Also, I like the cover.

Overall this was not a bad book but I  still feel disappointed in the end.
